Mbps to MB/s Converter: Internet Speed vs Download Speed Explained
Quick answer: divide megabits per second (Mbps) by 8 to get megabytes per second (MB/s). 100 Mbps is at most 12.5 MB/s before overhead. Broadband is sold in bits; consoles and stores show sizes in bytes, which is why mixing them up makes estimates eight times too fast.
Bits, bytes and binary units
One byte is 8 bits. Internet packages use decimal megabits (1 Mb = 1,000,000 bits). File sizes may be shown in decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000 MB) or binary units (1 GiB = 1,024 MiB); consoles commonly use the binary-style figure but label it GB. This converter states which convention it uses so you can compare tools fairly.
| Mbps | MB/s (max) |
|---|---|
| 25 | 3.125 |
| 50 | 6.25 |
| 100 | 12.5 |
| 500 | 62.5 |
| 1,000 | 125 |

Frequently asked questions
How many MB/s is 100 Mbps?
12.5 MB/s at most, because 1 byte is 8 bits. Real throughput is a little lower because of protocol overhead.
Why is my download slower than my package speed?
Packages show a maximum in megabits. Wi-Fi, other devices and server load reduce what you actually receive.
What is the difference between GB and GiB?
A GB is 1,000 MB; a GiB is 1,024 MiB. The difference is about 7% at gigabyte scale.
