GTA VI Preload Not Starting? PS5 and Xbox Checklist
Latest verified dates: pre-load 10 November, launch 19 November 2026. See the GTA VI Launch Hub for sources and the change log.
If your GTA VI pre-load has not started, the cause is usually the date, the code, a console setting or storage space. Work through these checks in order. They follow the Rockstar Pre-Load FAQ, and the preload troubleshooter walks you through the same questions.
Key takeaways
- Pre-load cannot start before 10 November 2026.
- Boxed copies need a redeemed code, because there is no disc.
- PS5 needs auto-downloads on, and the console on or in Rest Mode.
- Xbox needs automatic updates on, and the console on or in Sleep mode.
- You need up to 212 GB of available space.
1. Check the start time for your console
PS5 starts at midnight local time on 10 November. Xbox starts at 12 a.m. GMT on 10 November. If you are in the Americas, Xbox starts on the evening of 9 November local time. Our preload times guide has a table of examples.
2. Check you own the game on this account
The console must be signed in to the account that bought the game or redeemed the code. If you share a console, check you are on the right profile.
3. Redeem your code if you bought a box
Physical versions contain only a download code. Redeem it on the store for your console, then look for the game in your library.
4. Check the automatic download settings
Rockstar lists these conditions for automatic pre-load. If yours is off, turn it on and leave the console connected. You can also try starting the download by hand from your library.
5. Check your storage
Rockstar says the pre-load requires up to 212 GB of available space, depending on your device. That is the free space to clear, and it may not match the final installed size. Read our storage guide if you need to move games.
6. Check service status
If everything looks right, a store or network problem may be the cause. Check the official status pages before you delete anything.
7. Use the official help pages
Questions
My download is slow. Is that normal?
Large downloads can slow when many players start together. Try a wired connection, and pause other downloads at home.
Should I delete and restart the download?
Only as a last step, after you have checked status pages and official help. Restarting costs you the progress you have made.
